The Alzheimer's Association of Houston & Southeast Texas will offer a telephone support group for Alzheimer's dementia caregivers who cannot access a traditional face to face group. Participants will connect through a conference call for sharing, caregiver education, and support.

Community and Caregiver Presentation: Communicating and Interacting with Persons with Dementia

Alzheimer's disease dramatically alters the dynamics between the diagnosed individual and his or her loved ones. Family and friends of persons with Alzheimer'sfrequently feel that their loved one is no longer the person he or she once was. This presentation provides caregivers with tools for effectively communicating and connecting with persons with dementia. Specifically it will cover nonverbal vs. verbal communication, positive physical approach, person-centered approach, and activity development.

Blondes vs. Brunettes (BvB) is a volunteer-driven, active event in the form of a flag football game for women designed to bring young community leaders together to support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. Participating teams play on the age-old rivalry between blondes and brunettes. In 2011, the teams raised over $125,000 to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support, and research programs.

Our presenter will offer tips on how to keep individuals safe from wandering and modifications necessary for a safe home environment. Driving issues will be addressed as will the importance of disaster preparedness.
